Our commitment

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA across the public site, sign-up and sign-in, the story builder, the story reader, and your account and billing pages. We have not yet completed a formal third-party audit; until we do, we describe our status as working toward WCAG 2.1 AA, not as conformant.

What we have built in

  • Skip links, a logical heading structure, and labelled page regions.
  • Every control can be reached and used with a keyboard, with a visible two-tone focus ring. In the reader, the arrow keys turn pages.
  • Story pages, illustrations, and decorative images carry text alternatives, or are hidden from assistive technology when they are purely decorative.
  • Narration is always accompanied by the page text on screen, so every story can be read without sound. The moving story shows each page's text as a caption.
  • Status is never shown by colour alone, and motion respects “reduce motion”.
  • Form fields have visible labels, hints, and error messages tied to the field.
  • Dictation is optional; every memory can be typed instead.

Known limitations

  • Keepsake PDF. The downloadable PDF declares its language and title but is not yet a tagged PDF, so a screen reader may not follow its reading order or describe its illustrations. The web reader holds the same story in an accessible form (see below).
  • Illustrations. Story illustrations are made by AI. Their text alternative is the page's short caption or title, not a full description of each picture; the story text beside it carries the meaning.
  • Payment pages. Checkout and the billing portal are run by our payment provider, Lemon Squeezy, and follow its accessibility practices. If you cannot complete a payment, contact us and we will help.

Accessible alternatives

Every finished story can be read in the web reader, which works with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and browser zoom, and can be listened to with narration. If you need your story in another format – a plain-text version of a story, for example – write to us and we will provide it at no charge.

Tell us about a barrier

If something on FamilyTellings is hard or impossible for you to use, please tell us at support@familytellings.com with the page and what happened. We aim to reply within five business days, and we will tell you what we are doing about it.
